Productivity at the Most Remote Locations

With globalization comes the creation of remote offices around the world, often in locations where there is likely a lack of modern networks. Despite this challenge, businesses require production from employees in all locations, and the applications that enable productivity require network connectivity. Satellite communications bring the network to virtually any location around the world, without the need of an infrastructure of cable, fiber, or even copper.  With network connectivity, access to business applications is possible, which facilitates productivity regardless of location.
The Challenge

Long Distance and Noise Kills Productivity

While satellites prove to be a fitting solution for network-challenged locations, they come with a high price tag, and often do not satisfy the performance needs of the business.  Orbiting at over 20,000 kilometers from the surface, the distance for a packet to travel one way from the client to the server could approach 50,000 kilometers.  Under optimal conditions, this distance translates to considerable latency. Add chatty applications to the equation, and performance becomes dismal if not completely unusable. Additionally, using radio transport, satellites are especially prone to packet loss caused by environmental interference. With slower performance and retransmission delays, application use over satellite links can be frustrating, almost certainly lowering productivity.

Acceleration

Challenged with the often life-and-death need to make satellite communication fast, reliable, and accurate, NASA developed the Space Communications Protocol Standards (SCPS) to ensure optimal performance. Not only does Expand’s SCPS-based TCP acceleration greatly reduce the effects of latency on data transmission, but it is able to completely fill the links so full utilization is possible. Used as the standard for all military-on-the-move applications, Expand’s optimized SCPS-based TCP acceleration is also able to greatly improve the reliability of the links, counteracting retransmission delays.
WAN Optimization

Expand’s pioneering compression regularly delivers 400% bandwidth increases over non-compressed bandwidth, with peaks often over 1,000%. In addition to the compression, Expand's easy to use QoS ensures that these links are aligned with the business, so that business critical applications get the bandwidth they need and are not competing with unauthorized bandwidth constraining applications.
